"APE" SCREENING

I'm officially excited about seeing my film, "APE" on the big screen...at least I think it's going to be a big screen...After a couple of rainy weekends that stalled this short film, we finally got it all in the can and I have to thank everyone who came through for me...week after canceled week to get this done.

The film is inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's Murder's In The Rue Morgue. I found parts of the story kind of funny and since there is an ape in the story and I happened to own a gorilla suit, I just had to do it.

This is the first film I've made in many years...my style and tone is pretty much the same since I used to make what I called Super 8 "psychodramas" in the 80s. Come see it live and you can come to your own conclusions.

There will be two screenings at the Baltimore Museum of Art. Dec. 4th and 11th, at 8pm...and it's FREE!

This is a 48 Hour Film Project.

Poe Film Shoot Complete

We finished shooting our short film for the Baltimore Museum of Art, a film companion to a larger Edgar Allan Poe exhibit that is on view now. The films will be shown in early December and I was thrilled to be asked to contribute one to the mix.

I had never really read much Poe, but after reading a good dozen stories, I made the quick decision that I had to do my version of Murders in the Rue Morgue...mostly because there is a killer ape in the story and I happen to have a gorilla suit. My version is as loose as a zoot suit and we took the concept of guerilla filmmaking to the extreme. I've decided to call the short "Ape".

I don't know how it's going to turn out, but it was fun to shoot...editing starts this week and I'll know by next week what we have.

Screening announcements will follow.

CSS Plays With Polaroids in "Move" Video

I am still warming up to CSS' new release "Donkey", it just didn't grab me and shake me like their first release, but their new video for "Move" is kind of cool and very heavy with the Polaroids. I just couldn't help but imagine how all of their photos are covered in fingerprints though.

See Last Days of Polaroid for my most recent shots.

Georgina Spelvin!

I've been researching the films from the Golden Age of Porn. And that doesn't mean I'm just laying around watching porn, but I am completely fascinated by the stars of the era like Seka, Jamie Gillis, Georgina Spelvin and others.

Georgina was credited as being one of the best actresses working in the porn industry and made some crossover, including the Carol Doda country-western drive-in movie, Honky Tonk Nights.

Check her blog for dates, she will be reading from her new book "The Devil Made Me Do It" and making an appearance in San Francisco and again in Los Angeles soon!

Haunted By the 80s

Strawberry Switchblade, dig those crazy music-box-ballerina-dance-moves! Don't miss the end of this amazing video with the "stop-start" vocals. Check their website for downloads and don't miss "Cut You With A Cake Knife". You owe it to yourself to listen. Can you spot the intro titles typo?

The second video is from the mind-numbing Mini Pops, performing Haircut 100s "Fantastic Day". Listen to the guy in the audience who can't stop laughing his head off.

Artscape Photobooth

A couple weeks back I was asked to be one of the "photographers" to shoot people during the long Artscape weekend. I put the word photographers in quotes because that's how one apparently "real" photographer introduced me to someone that weekend. I quickly noted that I was indeed a hack and that the other guy was a pro...we shouldn't be confused. I'm the artist.

The actual Photobooth was pretty cool. I spent a very hot, sweaty hour and a half inside the cube with a parade of people coming through for their photos which were supposed to be printed, laminated and shown on the windows of Penn Station, but the process proved to be too slow and not many of the actual photos made it that far.

Failed Barf Bag

I tried to screen print an illustration onto paper bags to make some barf bags, but they didn't work out...

I only screen printed something once and it turned out really well and I thought I was a master printer...but I turned out to not know what the fuck I was doing and my bags looked like shit.

Here's the illustration I was trying to screen...I think it was too small to work with on a lunch size brown bag.

Defekto on Video..oh No

Video guy/artisté Dru Bynum shot a short video of me a few months ago for his "Artist Series"...I watched it once from across the room where it was playing on a laptop and I think it was good...I just haven't warmed up to watching myself talk about myself. My first step in ego training is telling people about it.

4th Wall Photo Show or "Look at my photo of Dan Deacon"

I have to hand it to Molly O'Donnell, the curator of The 4th Wall, a group photo show opening tonight at The Wind-Up Space. She was easy to work with, efficient, generous and it appears she could promote the shit out of the most constipated of asses. I'm not sure if that's the best way to put it, but putting it straight, she is good.

4TH WALL POSTER ART BY MR. ALEX FINE

It's anti-climactic night for me..I got off on her enthusiasm and the energy that she put into this show without seeming like she was shoving it down anyone's throat. She got a mention on WYPR's morning show (July 7th), a Critic's Pick in the City Paper...and whatever is in the news about it this morning.

Can anyone guess how many of the eight participating photographers will exhibit a photo of Dan Deacon at tonight's opening?? My guess is five...which would include myself. How could I not? I went into this thinking, "Oh, it's going to be the "Voyeurs of Dan Deacon Show" and who wouldn't want to be labeled that?

The City Paper ran photos of my contributions to the 4th Wall. They're bigger in real life and not printed to hang in any museum...so just be warned, don't be like me and feel like you climaxed before you even see the show.
